Sir Sidney Nolan
By inheritance to his widow, Lady Nolan
The Estate of Lady Nolan, UK
Nolan began his career making abstracts before gradually shifting into figuration in the early 1940s. He did not return to abstraction until the late 1960s when he began work on his enormous multi-panel Oceania paintings (the series includes Paradise Gardens, Arts Centre Melbourne; and Snake, MONA, Hobart). The present work is a rare example of Nolan's large-scale single panel abstracts from this period.
