RELATED WORKS:
Sidney Nolan, Rimbaud at Harar 1963, 152.5 x 122cm in Pearce, B., Sidney Nolan, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, 2007, p.186 (illustrated)

Nolan's 1962-63 African paintings were largely inspired by his interest in the French poet Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) who spent most of the latter part of his life in East Africa. The painting is probably loosely based on a photograph of the poet dressed in white, taken in 1883.
