The 'Scribe' series emerges from William Kentridge's 2010 Louvre Museum project, 'Carnets d'Egypte' (Egyptian Sketchbooks). Displayed in the Egyptian Collection Wing, the exhibition featured 16 short films, one titled 'Scribe'. Here, Kentridge silently enacts interactions between scribes, inspired by Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem 'Ozymandias'. Adaptations of the Scribe imagery, including the etching, depict Kentridge reciting Shelley's poem. These etchings, starting in 2010, showcase Kentridge's mastery, employing expressive lines to convey intricate details. Themes of history, politics, and memory, often rooted in his South African background, permeate the series. Kentridge's etching process fosters intimacy, inviting viewers to explore the narratives within each print, embodying a captivating blend of storytelling and visual artistry.
