Lot 326
This square seal is crafted from Tianhuang stone, characterized by its warm hue and fine texture. The knob is carved in low-relief with archaistic phoenix patterns on the interlocking ground patterns, commonly seen on ancient bronze vessels.
The smooth side of the seal bears the inscription "Shang Jun" and the characters "Chongqing", while the seal face is carved with the three characters "Chongqing Studio".
Shang Jun, whose real name was Zhou Bin, was a native of Zhangzhou in Fujian province and a master carver during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty. Renowned for his unique craftsmanship and exceptional skill in carving seal knobs, he produced numerous masterpieces. His work was highly esteemed among the literati, as evidenced by Xu Kang's praise in Records of Past Dreams and Shadows: "For seal knobs, Shang Jun's works are second to none." This highlights the high regard in which his creations were held by scholars and connoisseurs.
This seal, with its carefully selected material, simple yet elegant design, and traditional decorative patterns, exemplifies the essence of Chinese cultural heritage. The exquisite craftsmanship of the knob further reflects the unparalleled skill of the master carver.
3.6cm high; weight: 30g.
