A VERY RARE CHINESE DEGE WROUGHT IRON CIRCULAR COVERED BOX WITH SILVER INLAY, QIANLONG MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)
This type of metalwork was produced in very high quality and vast number in Tibet as early as the 14th and 15th century. The unique technique was known as 'damascening' to Europeans, but called 'Dege' in China, the name of the town through which the metal work was brought to China-proper. Different from common inlay-work, Dege work have their surface of wrought iron abraded and then gold and/or silver applied in highly decorative patterns. So favoured were they that the Qianlong emperor specially commissioned a group of Tibetans to produce vessels and objects in this technique for daily use, such as brush pots and plates, in addition to those used for traditional ceremonial and religious purposes.

A group of iron vessels, inlaid in silver with Qianlong reign mark and of the period, has been researched by Brian McElney and published by Orientations Magazine and The Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, England, where there are several examples.
