Muriel Smith (American, 1923-1985) was born in New York City and became a musical theatre star in both the USA and the UK throughout the 1940s and 1950s. One of her most famous roles was as the lead singer in the Royal Opera House, London's production of Carmen running from 1950-1957.
The bronze for this sculpture was commissioned by the Royal Opera House, London in 1955 whilst Lennie was studying in London at The Byam Shaw School of Art Kensington. We believe the Bronze of this sculpture remains on show at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.
