Lot 243

Albert MOORE (1841–1893)
A classically-draped woman in an interior, half-length, in profile to the left
Oil on canvas
Signed upper right with the artist's anthemion device
22 x 14cm

Estimate $20,000 - $30,000

Unsold

As noted in the catalogue description, the work has been reduced in height, its lower part having been removed at some point after its sale at Sotheby's in 1974.

Inspection of the work removed from its frame reveals the canvas is laid down on a plywood panel and that the overall size of the canvas is 23 x 15cm (22 x 14cm sight size within the frame), although its edges are a little irregular and there are small losses to the paint layer across the lower edge (all this being concealed within the frame rebate).

Inspection under u.v. light suggests the possibility of a few scattered small points of old retouching, although this is not certain either way.

Sotheby's Belgravia, Fine Victorian Paintings, Drawings, and Watercolours, London, 9 July 1974, lot 52 (as 'A corridor', illustrated)
Julian Simm Galleries, London, from whom acquired by Terence Lane in August, 1975

The illustration and dimensions (39.5 x 14cm) given in the 1974 Sotheby's catalogue reveal that the work was subsequently reduced in height; the figure was originally full-length.
