Lot 209
Hunters riding to hounds in full cry
Oil on canvas
Apparently unsigned
72 x 125cm
Estimate $1,600 - $2,400
The varnish is somewhat discoloured, most apparent in the overall yellowish tone of the sky area, but the painting generally presents well at normal viewing, with an unobtrusive craquelure consistent with age and no conspicuous defects.
Inspection under UV light reveals various areas of repainting. The largest of these are mostly around the open sky area upper centre with some smaller passages of retouching to details of the landscape and to the mounted figure beneath the tree at far right, together with small points of retouching scattered throughout. These are all quite well executed and blended, visible at very close inspection but not obvious at normal viewing.
With the exception of one very small repaired puncture lower right (which corresponds with a small point of retouching to the front), there are no repairs to the visible parts of the reverse of the canvas (being the whole of the reverse except the edges concealed by the broad stretcher bars).
The gilt wood frame has some losses to the gesso along its outer edges but is generally in good condition.
