Of spreading cylindrical form with a shaped handle, the hinged flat cover with a scroll thumbpiece, the body with two reeded bands, the body and cover engraved with the Maitland family crest of a lion sejant affronté holding a sword and fleur-de-lis above a crown and motto 'Consilio et animis'
