Lot 127
Meiji period, circa 1890
The body with large reserves to the front and reverse finely decorated in polychrome enamels and gold with figures in an extensive landscape and a scene of three young women in a garden with flowering bushes and a blossoming tree, otherwise decorated with floral, foliate, and geometric designs in gold on the cobalt ground, signed underside, possibly Chikusai, together with a Shimazu family symbol, with a later turned hardwood stand
63cm high (vase alone)
Estimate $1,000 - $1,500
Inspection under natural and UV light reveals the vase to be in very good condition consistent with age and handling.
The decoration, including the raised enamel details, is well preserved, with only occasional points of typical light, not obvious handling wear to the gilding. The glaze to the main decoration is very finely, unobtrusively crackled with age. The vase is somewhat dirty, especially to the upward-facing surfaces of the mouth and shoulder, but test-cleaning a small area of the mouth indicates the surface dirt is easily removed with water.
