Lot 146

A WILLIAM IV ROSEWOOD SIDE CABINET BY GILLOWS
Early 1830s

Rectangular, the top with a crested gallery with a high shelf raised on scrolling supports, a mirror plate to the back, the body with a pair of glazed doors with gilt brass grilles enclosing adjustable shelves between reeded pilasters supporting foliate corbels, on gadrooned bun feet, the top edge of the right-hand door impressed 'GILLOWS·LANCASTER'
156cm high, 92cm wide, 45cm deep

Estimate $2,000 - $3,000

Sold for $1,800

In very good condition, minor scratches and general light wear to surfaces consistent with age and use.

Most of the applied bead-and-reel moulding to the frieze is detached but is present (in three sections) and would be readily glued back in place.

The catalogue photos do not represent the actual appearance of the mirror plate. The plate, which may be original, has some age-related degradation of its silvering causing spotting across most of the plate.

The lock (a Victorian lock by Richard Cooper & Son, Wolverhampton) is an early replacement; it operates well with the key present.
