Lot 49

AN EARLY VICTORIAN MAHOGANY AND CANED LIBRARY BERGÈRE
1830s

The bowed back with scrolled toprail and downswept arms with lappeted and scrolling terminals above the shaped seat, on turned and reeded supports with casters to the front, the back and seat caned
89cm high, 58cm wide, 71cm deep

Estimate $800 - $1,200

Sold for $3,800

Structurally sound, with all joints firm. There is a shallow old loss (or point of heavy wear) to the centre of the front seat rail (as visible in the catalogue photos). The frame is otherwise in good condition, showing typical light bumps, mostly around the lower parts of the supports, and scuffs and handling wear to the polish.

Fillets of wood have been added later (fixed with screws) to the underside of the toprail, evidently to reinforce the lower part of the toprail against it splitting around the anchors of the cane work. These fillets have been cut to fit around original parts of the frame (i.e. it appears the original frame has not been altered to accommodate these) and it seems these fillets could be removed to restore the original lines of the frame. A screw hole (now vacant) has been drilled into the rear side of the central support of the back close to its base.

The cane work has split from its anchors across most of the top of the back and down its left side to about the point at which the frame begins to level to form the arm, this causing some loss of tenson in the caning.
