Lot 53

A GEORGE II OAK CHEST-ON-CHEST
Mid-18th century

The upper part with a moulded cornice and inlaid fruitwood frieze above two short and three long drawers between chamfered front corners, the lower part with three drawers, on bracket feet
179cm high, 115cm wide, 55cm deep

Estimate $1,000 - $1,500

Sold for $2,400

Structurally sound and generally very well presented, with typical minor shrinkage gaps and splits, light knocks, and general wear and superficial marks consistent with age and use. There are small repairs to the edges of two drawers (restoring damaged lip moulding, as visible in the catalogue photos).

The pulls and their backplates are sympathetic replacements; the escutcheons might be original. Around the pulls of the upper two short drawers are minor stains left by the removal of the previous pulls. Only the upper right drawer ever had a lock (the keyhole escutcheons on all other drawers are blind) but this lock is long gone.
