Lot 1063
Deep incised decoration comprising stylized clan markings and with ancient fibre bindings for attachment, broken spear-tips remaining, a very early example.
98 x 62cm
Estimate $2,000 - $3,000
Collection of Robert Bleakley
The flat-edged curved waisted body motifs on either side of the central portion bear a strong resemblance to Dong Son culture axe heads which have been excavated on the north coast of New Guinea. It is a fascinating conjecture when one considers that the axe heads found in New Guinea date from c. 500 BCE
The curvilinear motifs are thought to represent sex organs.
