Lot 231

Franz Xavier BERGMANN (1861–1936)
A figure at prayer on a rug
Cold-painted bronze
Impressed underside with Bergmann's letter B within a vase mark with the number 391 and 'GESCHUTZT'
20.5cm high, 18cm wide, 26cm deep

Estimate $2,600 - $3,400

Sold for $2,600

Generally in good condition consistent with age and handling, the original patination and colours (less vivid than might appear in the catalogue photos) well preserved, with typical light handling wear on high points. The gilt and silvered surfaces to the figure's front (principally the drapery across the front of his thighs and the scabbard) show more surface dirt and superficial oxidisation than elsewhere (as visible in the catalogue photos), the rest of the drapery being generally clean; there is some accumulated dirt in the recesses of the rug, which is cast with texture
