Lot 3
A portrait of a young woman with a flower in her hair and wearing a black shawl
Oil on artists' board
Apparently unsigned
With the fragmentary remains of an early part-printed exhibition label to the reverse of the frame, the name of the exhibition largely lost ('The Exhibitio[ ….? ]urne'), with the title ('Rose of […?]'), lender's(?) name, and artist's name entered in brown ink (all now incomplete or largely faded to illegibility, the artist's name the faintest)
23 x 19.5cm, oval
Estimate $700 - $1,000
In good condition consistent with age, with very slight and superficial shrinkage cracking (as visible in the catalogue photo).
Examination under u.v. light indicates the paint layer is original and undisturbed, with the possible exception of three areas – around and below the chin, to the right of the head (straddling the edge of the cowl and the background), and towards the lower right edge – in which broad, loose brush strokes are fluorescing differently from the rest of the surface. At close inspection it appears these are variations in the varnish layer (as their broadness would also suggest), rather than in the paint layer, but this is not certain. In any event, these variations are of some age, not recent.
The frame, evidently original, is in good condition consistent with age and handling.
