Joan Miró's "L'Enfance d'Ubu" series returns to the unruly world of Père Ubu, the character first created by French writer Alfred Jarry in the late 19th century. Jarry's play Ubu Roi was notorious for its absurdity and satire, and is often seen as an early touchpoint for Dada and Surrealism. In this series, Miró responds with a lively, spontaneous visual language of loose lines, vivid colour and unexpected shapes, capturing both the humour and slightly unruly energy of Jarry's original figure.
