Lot 255

Gaetano CHIERICI (1838–1920)
A mother and her playing children in an interior
Oil on canvas
Signed and dated lower left: Chierici / Gaet[?] 1869\

The stretcher retaining two original labels, one a printed label of the Societa Artistica, Florence, the other (now incomplete) in ink with the number 81 and the artist's name
45.5 x 56.5cm

Estimate $5,500 - $7,500

Unsold

There are a few areas of loss or damage: an old loss (approx. 4.5 x 1.5cm) in the canvas upper right; two small holes (losses in the canvas, each about 2 x 2mm) upper centre, close to the ceiling; a puncture with associated paint loss to the right of the mother's skirt together with a scrape to the paint layer, scattered paint flake losses, and cracking between that damage and the foot stool; and two further small paint flake losses in the dark area above the boy's left arm.

The holes upper centre and upper right appear to be associated with the inner edge of the stretcher (evidently caused by the canvas, which is quite thin, rubbing against that edge). Inspection of the work from behind, against the light, reveals thin spots in the canvas along the same alignment below the hole upper right, and another similar on the other side of the work also aligned with the inner edge of the stretcher, but these thin spots have not extended through the canvas to become holes in the work.

The work is otherwise in good condition. Inspection under u.v. light reveals variations in the glaze (not apparent at normal viewing) but no apparent later painting.

To the frame, there is cracking around its joints, surface losses to its gesso, the applied bow to one corner is detached (but present), and it has been partly refinished in gold paint at some point.

(In preparing this report, the work has not been examined out of its frame.)
