Lot 23

A GEORGE II CHINOISERIE LONG-CASE CLOCK
Samuel Woodham, Richmond, Surrey, second quarter 18th century

The eight-day movement with anchor escapement striking on a bell on the hour, the silvered Roman numeral dial with subsidiary seconds dial and calendar aperture within applied brass foliate spandrels, the glazed bell-top hood of architectural design with moulded cornice and gilt blind fretwork frieze surmounted with three ball finials above columns to the corners, the trunk of typical form with a panelled door with glazed pendulum aperture above the plinth base, the green-japanned case decorated to the front in raised gold and coloured lacquer with Chinese-style scenes of figures, animals, and birds in landscapes with buildings, floral and foliage decoration elsewhere
268cm high, 51cm wide, 27cm deep

Estimate $2,600 - $3,400

Sold for $4,000

Leonard Joel's consultant horologist advises that the movement appears intact but is presently not running and will require servicing. The pendulum and pair of weights are present. No winding key is present.

The case is in generally good condition, consistent with age and type, with typical minor shrinkage cracks (the most pronounced being that across the front of the plinth of the trunk, as visible in the catalogue photo), light bumps, and general wear. The central finial is a replacement (and is a little loose). The trunk door retains its lock but no key is present for this.

The gilding to the finials and the capitals and bases of the hood columns has been refreshed; the same probably applies to parts of the decoration generally, including around the base of the plinth, but not obviously so. The raised lacquer work to the front of the trunk appears original and generally well preserved but the varnish over this, as on the case overall, is somewhat discoloured, variously yellowed through to mottled brown and in some small areas, mostly around the edges of the trunk doors and surrounding parts and the left side of the trunk, darkened to an opaque brown.

The opinions expressed in the condition reports are a guide only and should not be treated as a statement of fact.
