Lot 195
Second half 19th century
The bevelled rectangular main plate within receding marginal plates in a water-gilt carved and pierced frame of scrolling foliage around shell centres
165cm high, 122cm wide, 9cm deep
Estimate $2,000 - $3,000
Generally very well presented.
The silvering to the main plate is finely and evenly spotted throughout. (This is visible in the catalogue photo but extends across the whole plate, not only the left side as the photo suggests.) The margin plates have more slight and occasional spotting.
Each of the carved foliate corners covering the mitres of the margin plates has a fixing screw to its centre, probably later, the heads of these painted gold to blend (as visible in the catalogue photo).
There are occasional slight chip losses to the gilt gesso, and the gilding to the parts of the frame above and below the lower margin plate is worn, exposing the red bole beneath (as visible in the catalogue photo). The gilding is otherwise well preserved, the bright water gilt passages contrasting well with the matte passages.
(The back of the mirror, presently inaccessible, has not been fully inspected in preparing this report.)
