Lot 181
Late 19th–early 20th century
In Louis XVI style, possibly adapted from cassolettes, each in the form of a Neo-Classical covered vase raised on three supports on a marble plinth base with toupie feet, the supports modelled as hoof-footed herms of winged putti outstretched and chained to the vase enclosing a coiled serpent beneath each vase, each of two lights on a standard above the vase, with tasselled watered fabric shades
Electricity Safety Act 1998: This electrical equipment may be faulty and should be inspected and tested by a competent person in accordance with AS/NZS 3760 before connection to electricity supply.
Each 106cm high
Estimate $3,000 - $4,000
Generally in good condition consistent with age and use.
On one lamp, two of the applied lengths of chain connecting the wrists of putti figures to the loops at the neck of the cassolette are lacking (one of these losses being visible in the catalogue photo, on the lamp to the right).
To the arm of one putto figure there is a small irregularly shaped hole (approximately 3mm x 4mm) through the bronze, the nature of which is not clear; it appears to be of some age.
There is scattered light wear and superficial discolouration to the gilding on the bronze, most so around the lower parts; bumps and wear to the corners and edges of the marble plinths; and surface dirt to the marble generally, mostly accumulated in crevices in around the bronze mounts.
The shades are in good, clean condition.
The lamps appear to be in working order (the lights operate) but the condition of the electrical parts has not been assessed and should be inspected and tested by an electrician before connection to electricity supply.
