Lot 210
'A view from Pont Aberglaslyn'
Watercolour with gum arabic heightening over traces of pencil
Unsigned
Inscribed as title in pencil verso and titled as 'View from the new Pont / Aberglaslyn' in pencil on an early label preserved to the back, this also inscribed '634'
57 x 88.5cm
Estimate $4,000 - $6,000
A little age-toned and faded overall, and with one or two very slight superficial marks, but the work is otherwise well preserved. Three vertical bands of toning visible across the work are more subtle at first-hand viewing than might appear from the catalogue photos.
The colonial-style cross-grain cedar frame is in very good condition.

Private collection, England
A small grey wash sketch by Glover of the same view from Pont Aberglaslyn, North Wales, possibly preparatory for the present lot, was sold in 2005 (Bonhams, Athenaeum Sale, Bury St Edmunds, England, 14–15 September 2005, lot 263) and a large oil painting by him looking in the opposite direction, towards the bridge (‘pont'), has appeared at auction in England and Australia several times since 1981 (with the location repeatedly mis-spelled ‘Pont Averglastyn', most recently Leonard Joel, Fine Art, Melbourne, 19 March 2013, lot 40).
