Lot 200
Second half 19th century, probably Italian
The convex circular plate in a moulded frame with balls to the scotia surmounted with a spread eagle crest
Note: The appearance of the plate in the catalogue photograph has been modified; it does not represent the actual appearance of the plate.
88cm high, 57cm wide, 18cm deep
Estimate $800 - $1,200
Generally in very good condition, the gilding apparently original.
There are scattered scrapes and surface losses to the gesso on the frame moulding and the fronts of some of the balls. On one ball, its fixing pin has broken through its front, leaving a surface loss, and two or three others show signs of similar breaks being filled and touched up.
Of the two tailpieces to the bottom of the frame, the larger (behind the smaller one to the front)) has become detached, presently held in place with tape to the back. The front tail piece is a little loose, as is the foliate piece to the right of the eagle crest.
The plate appears to be an old replacement and shows scattered very slight, unobtrusive spots to its silvering.
