Lot 44

A FRENCH AUTOMATON, CHILD HIDING IN THE CABBAGE ROSE
By Roullet et Dechamps, circa 1890

Modelled as a papier-mâché cabbage rose with green velvet bowl and pink-tinged muslin petals, and with additional decorative flowers, hiding inside the cabbage rose is a bisque-head child doll with brown glass paperweight eyes, blonde mohair wig, who is holding her arms up to her mouth, when wound, the lid pops open, the little bisque head emerges, turns from side to side, and moves her arms as though blowing kisses, bearing a blue ribbon award from the 1959 UFDC convention
25cm high, the base 20cm wide, 20cm deep

Estimate $1,000 - $2,000

Sold for $5,500

Wear, losses and stains to flowers, and fabric base overall
Accompanied by key
Appear to function well, but on occasion the doll doesn't full move side to side.
No visible restoration to the doll, but as she is mostly concealed in the cabbage rose, it is difficult to see clearly.
