Lot 278

A LARGE CLASSICAL-STYLE PLASTER RELIEF, AFTER THE ANTIQUE
Late 20th century

Depicting Hermes, Eurydice, and Orpheus
121cm high, 97cm wide, 17cm deep

Estimate $600 - $900

Sold for $2,600

There is a crack across the front left corner of the base (between Hermes's right foot and the corner) which might indicate a repaired break; if so, it has been repaired well, stable with no movement.

The front of Orpheus's right foot (that part of it that projects beyond the front of the base) may have been reattached; it so, the repair is well executed and barely discernible.

There is a fine crack and slight associated superficial loss to the right side about two-thirds of the way up (the loss being visible in the catalogue photo); the crack ends short of the Orpheus's left arm.

Otherwise, a few scattered light and inconspicuous bumps and scuffs, and light chips around the edges of the base.

There is a greyish residue to parts of the relief (as visible in the catalogue photos) which appears to be original (simulating the patina of age) rather than later dirt.

(In preparing this report it has not been possible to examine the reverse of the relief.)
