Joseph Hamilton sculpted the South African War Memorial (also known as the 'Memorial to Fallen Soldiers' or the 'Memorial to the 5th Victorian Contingent') in the King's Domain, Melbourne, unveiled in 1904. An incidental reference in an 1898 newspaper report indicates Hamilton had a studio or rooms in Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, at that time. Little else of his life and work seems to be recorded.

A marble bust by Hamilton and another attributed to him was sold at auction in Melbourne in 2017.
