Lot 252

EUROPEAN SCHOOL Mid-19th century
A capriccio Italian landscape with Roman ruins beside a river
Oil on canvas
Apparently unsigned
49cm diameter

Estimate $1,200 - $1,800

Sold for $1,500

Generally in very good condition consistent with age, with no damage or later painting apparent under natural or u.v. light.

Around the upper and upper left edges is a band about 1–1.5cm wide of pale brown discolouration in the varnish, with similar but more scattered and speckled discolouration in lighter passages elsewhere, mainly in the areas of sky (all as visible in the catalogue photo).

The antique frame, which might be original to the work, is in reasonably good condition, with some cracking and slight losses; it has been refinished in gold paint at some point.

(In preparing this report, the work has not been examined out of its frame.)

The opinions expressed in the condition reports are a guide only and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Prospective buyers are encouraged to seek further information or request additional images during our pre-sale period where Leonard Joel staff are available for advice.
