A RARE AND FINE CHINESE METAL-LINED BRUSHPOT, RUAN YUAN MARK, QING DYNASTY (1644 - 1911)
The upper section of the brush pot is finely decorated with a continuous mountain landscape, followed by an inscription of Zhuzi Zhijia Ge Yan (Maxims for Managing the Household by Master Zhu), signed and sealed by Ruan Yuan.

Ruan Yuan (1764 -1849), style name Boyuan and sobriquet Yuntai, was a prominent scholar-official of the Qing dynasty and a leading figure of the Qianjia school of evidential scholarship. A native of Yizheng, Jiangsu, he obtained the jinshi degree in 1789 and held a number of high-ranking posts, including Governor of Zhejiang and Governor-General of Huguang, Liangguang, and Yungui. Renowned for his achievements in classical studies, Ruan Yuan compiled important works such as Huang Qing Jingjie and editions of the Confucian classics. He was also an influential patron of scholarship and education, founding academies and overseeing major editorial projects. His collected writings are published as Yanjing shi ji.

清 阮元款 锡錾刻筆筒
上部通景錾刻山水紋,下接〈朱子治家格言〉銘文,署款並鈐印阮元。
阮元(1764–1849),字伯元,號芸臺,清代著名學者與高級官員,為乾嘉考據學重要代表人物,江蘇儀徵人。乾隆五十四年(1789)進士,歷任浙江巡撫、湖廣總督、兩廣總督及雲貴總督等要職。其於經學研究成就卓著,編纂《皇清經解》並校訂多種儒家經典,亦積極興辦書院、推動學術事業,著有《揅經室集》。

Mr Mann was a well-known local philanthropist, has been collecting art for over fifty years and has amassed an impressive collection. With his business partner and friend, William Tatlow, they donated a significant portion of their collection of Asian ceramics and art to the Wollongong Art Gallery.

Mr Mann has also generously donated art from his collection to the Mudgee District Hospital, the Mid-Western Regional Council and many other local businesses.
