Second half 18th century
Rectangular, the apparently original thick slab top quarter-veneered in variegated cream and yellow marble above the moulded and panelled frieze with blind fretwork of interlaced circles centred on a relief tablet depicting Leda and the swan and with blocks with applied flower heads at the corners, on tapering turned and fluted supports with foliate capitals and feet
90cm high, 132cm wide, 66cm deep
Estimate $6,000 - $9,000
Structurally sound and generally in good condition, consistent with age and use, showing typical superficial knocks and wear. The gilding has been refreshed in places but appears substantially original.
There are various natural features and cracks in the marble veneer to the top (all stable) and minor knocks and wear to its edges.
To the front and sides there is a gap of around 5–7mm between the lower edge of the marble top and the upper edge of the frieze (as visible in the catalogue photos). The cause of this is not certain (given that to the top rests directly, with no gap, on the weight-bearing rails to the inner side of the frieze) but is probably from age-related shrinkage in the height of the fascia that forms the outer side of the frieze. There are gaps at both front corners of the frieze that certainly were cause by shrinkage.
The relief tablet to the centre of the frieze has losses and general wear to its gilt gesso surface and a replacement section to its upper left edge (as visible in the catalogue photos). The fretwork of interlaced circles to the frieze (which is applied to the frieze rather than carved from it) has a few fractures and small losses.
The front left support has a vertical shrinkage crack to its upper half on its inner right side (not affecting its integrity) and there are scattered worm holes to the frame and supports, most very old, a few more recent.
