Lot 122

A RARE CHINESE ENGRAVED GILT-BRONZE STEM CUP, TANG DYNASTY (618 - 907)
The deep sides of the cup are finely engraved with equestrian huntsmen in pursuit of game amid a floral landscape, set against a ring-punched ground above a knobbed, spreading foot, and with a band of scrolling foliage below the rim. The cup is accompanied by an old Japanese wood box.

This finely engraved stem cup exemplifies the refinement of Tang dynasty metalwork. Compare a smaller gilt-bronze stem cup engraved with a related floral scroll design on a ring-punched ground from the collection of Mrs Roy Hunt, illustrated by H. Trubner in The Arts of the Tang Dynasty, Los Angeles, 1957, no. 121. Another smaller gilt-bronze stem cup in the Avery Brundage Collection, engraved with a hunting scene, is illustrated by J. Fontein and Wu Tung in Unearthing China's Past, Boston, 1973, p. 180, pl. 93.

A comparable stem cup was sold at Christie's New York, 23 March 2023, lot 812; another slightly smaller example (5 cm high) was sold at the same house, London, 14 May 2019, lot 77.

可比較 Roy Hunt 夫人舊藏一件尺寸較小之鎏金銅高足盃,飾相類卷草紋,見 H. Trubner 著《The Arts of the Tang Dynasty》,洛杉磯,1957年,編號121;另有一件 Avery Brundage 收藏之例,飾狩獵圖,見 J. Fontein 與吳同著《Unearthing China’s Past》,波士頓,1973年,頁180,圖版93。
另見相類器,紐約佳士得,2023年3月23日,拍品812;及倫敦佳士得,2019年5月14日,拍品77(高5厘米)。
