A RARE BRONZE ELLIPTICAL VESSEL AND COVER, XU, EARLY EASTERN ZHOU, SPRING AND AUTUMN PERIOD (6TH CENTURY BC)
Of compressed form, the vessel is fitted with a pair of loop handles terminating in animal heads and is raised on four legs cast as animal heads and claws. The cover is surmounted by a flared crown-form finial with openwork sides, the top decorated with an interlaced rope design.

An almost identical example of the same size, formerly in the collection of Bishop William C. White and now in the Royal Ontario Museum (museum no. 932.16.71), is illustrated in Sara Irwin and Chen Shen, A Question of Provenance: The Bishop William White ‘Jincun' Collection in the Royal Ontario Museum, fig. 9.

Another comparable example was sold at Christie's London, 10 November 2015, lot 22.


春秋早期 青銅盨
器呈扁橢圓形,兩側設環耳,耳端作獸首,四足亦鑄為獸首與獸爪。蓋頂飾外撇冠形鈕,四壁鏤空,上飾交織繩紋。
一件尺寸及形制幾乎相同之例,曾為白晉士主教(Bishop William C. White)舊藏,現藏皇家安大略博物館(藏品號932.16.71),見 Sara Irwin 與 Chen Shen 著《A Question of Provenance: The Bishop William White ‘Jincun’ Collection in the Royal Ontario Museum》,圖9。
