AN EXTREMELY RARE AND LARGE STRAW-GLAZED DRAGON AMPHORA VASE, SUI/EARLY TANG DYNASTY, 7TH CENTURY
Of baluster form, rising to a tall waisted neck with a cup-shaped mouth, the neck applied with two intertwined dragons climbing upward toward the rim, their bodies forming loop handles just below the mouth, all covered in a finely crackled creamy-white glaze.
On the more commonly encountered Tang dynasty amphorae, the handles are typically formed as two separate dragons issuing from either side of the body and rising individually to bite the rim. By contrast, the present vase is distinguished by its highly unusual design, with two dragons emerging at the neck, entwining as they climb upward, and joining at the rim in biting the mouth edge. This striking handle configuration appears to be exceedingly rare, and no second comparable example has been noted on the market or museum collections.

Estimate $50,000 - $80,000
Overall in good condition, with a minor firing chip to the elbow of one dragon and a small area of glaze loss to the upper body, both consistent with the firing process.
