AN ARTS AND CRAFTS TEXTILE WALL HANGING ATTRIBUTED TO ALEXANDER MORTON
Early 20th century

Chenille brocade on a plain woven cotton ground, the Persian-inspired design of peacocks, antelopes, and other birds in a garden centred on a vase of flowers
211cm high, 117cm wide

Estimate $1,200 - $1,800

For the most part, in good condition but regrettably with areas of wear and loss to the weave across a band level with the peacocks and their tails (most visible in the catalogue photo). The most extensive and pronounced of these is at the centre of the body of the right-hand peacock (in which area there are also three small holes through the ground) and within the large leaf between this peacock and the right-hand edge. There are smaller areas of loss to the weave within the tail of the tail of left-hand peacock and the between this and the adjacent edge, and others smaller still scattered across this band generally.

The opinions expressed in the condition reports are a guide only and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Prospective buyers are encouraged to seek further information or request additional images during our pre-sale period where Leonard Joel staff are available for advice. Please note condition reports can be amended during the pre-sale period, so we strongly suggest any interested bidders check the published condition report available on the website before the auction commences. Leonard Joel makes no guarantee of the originality of mechanical or applied components. Absence of reference to such modifications does not imply that a lot is free from modifications.

Another, slightly larger example of this hanging is in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York (acc. no. 1936-50-4).
