Born in Melbourne, Iso Rae studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School between 1878 and 1887 before travelling to France to continue her artistic training. After spending time in Paris among a community of Australian artists, she settled in the fishing village of Étaples on the northern coast of France, where she would remain for more than forty years.
By the turn of the twentieth century, Étaples had become one of Europe's leading artists' colonies, attracting painters from Australia, Britain and the United States. The town offered artists an affordable place to live and work, while its coastline, fishing community and quality of light provided endless inspiration. Rae was among a number Australian artists who made Étaples their home, and the people and landscapes of the region remained the focus of her work throughout her career.
