Alice Mills trained in photography at the Johnstone O'Shannessy studio in Melbourne before establishing the Alice Mills Studio, where she built a successful practice in portraiture and press photography. Her photographs appeared regularly in newspapers and magazines, while portraiture became an important part of her studio practice.

Mills was recognised as one of Melbourne's leading commercial photographers, with the Alice Mills Studio considered among the finest in Australia for portraiture. At a time when relatively few women operated commercial photographic businesses in their own right, Mills established a considerable reputation and was highly regarded within her position.
