oil on canvas
signed lower right: Maclauchlan Milne
48.5 x 58cm
Estimate $30,000 - $50,000
This painting was gifted c.1960 to the vendor's parents by friends of the artist for they had grown up on the Isle of Arran, Scotland.
John Maclauchlan Milne work was the product of many artistic influences; hailing from an artistic family, his father being the Scottish landscape artist Joseph Milne, and educated in Edinburgh, his more traditional approach was altered after serving in France during WWI. Post-war, Milne spent long periods during the 1920s living and working in France and this exposure to many of the French modernists, combined with his close friendships with the Scottish Colourists, Samuel John Peploe (1871-1935) and Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell (1883-1937), had an irrefutable effect on his approach to style and colour. As WWII approached, Milne moved to the tiny village of High Corrie the Isle of Arran where he lived and painted until his death. Primarily a landscape artist, this beautiful coastal scene is a testament to his artistic practice and the strong influence Cezanne had on his technique. The everyday scene of the white-washed houses scattered on the rolling hills leading to the sea is a picture of loveliness, as Milne's strong use of colour, flowing structure and fluid brushstrokes create a rustic image infused with warmth and life.
