Whilst studying at the Académie Suisse in 1861, French Impressionist painter Jean-Baptiste Armand Guillaumin met Paul Cézanne and Camille Pissarro with whom he became lifelong friends. Although he surprisingly never reached the same level of recognition, he influenced their work greatly with one of his paintings of barges on the River Seine inspiring Cézanne's first etching.
Guillaumin was included in the Salon des Refusés in 1863, and went on to participate in the first group exhibition of the Impressionists in 1874.
Numerous artworks by Guillaumin are held in the permanent collection at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, housing the largest collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces in the world.
