A WHIELDON-STYLE POTTERY TEAPOT TOGETHER WITH A SIMILAR PLATE AND VASE
18th century

A bulbous cream-ware footed teapot with sprigged vines and berries, twig handle and spout, the three feet in the shape of a lion's paw, the finial in the form of a flying bird. Decorated in under-glaze oxide colours in the Whieldon style.
The plate lobed and moulded, decorated with similar spongue ware glaze, impressed D to underside.
The vase of bottle form, decorated uniformly.


12cm high, 23cm diameter (plate)

Repairs to lid of the teapot and plate. Overall crazing. Losses to the foot of the tea pot.

Thomas Whieldon of Fenton was a master potter. From 1740 he was a pioneer of English pottery manufacture specialising in lead glazes of the mottled and tortoiseshell type.
